Thanks Hayley. Yes—I sometimes think of them as ‘eyes half-closed’.

Wonderful words and pictures as always Michela, thanks for sharing. A line that resonated so clearly with me, ‘It is far from being the barren moor of history or the cursory glance.’ There are a group of people, some of whom are within our National Park’s sphere of influence, who insist that the moorland is a dead place and a monoculture but my experience over the past 25 years says they are wrong. It is not perfect, I understand that, but it is clear that they need the moorland to be perceived in a certain way that fits their agenda and they are not actually looking. These days there are a host of wild birds and flowers and all kinds of habitats similar to those you have found. But you do need to look for them by moving slowly and quietly through the landscape rather than stomp around loudly proclaiming it to be an ecological catastrophe. There are plenty of those in the world without the need to manufacture them. Phew, glad I got that off my chest 😂

I’m glad you did too Dave! Hope you feel better. There’s a line I read about the village here being built on barren moor, which I guess just proves that ignorance never goes out of fashion. It must be especially frustrating for you though, for its persistence and obvious inaccuracy. I’m glad you enjoyed this one. There will be more from the moss!

"It’s good to feel rooted into a landscape, however tiny. To build lignin, to withstand wind and weathering." Yes it is.

Beautiful images Michela.

I love the fact that this place inspires endless creativity. You always manage to find something new and different to photograph and write about which is so valuable to see.

There is so much beauty in the small scenes, and your work is a wonderful reminder not to overlook these.

Thank you for your kind and generous words Gill. Perhaps I had a good foundation before I moved here, revisiting the same small stretch of my local river for 9 years. Water is always different and encourages experimentation. Each time I thought I might have run out of ideas, something new emerged. This place has greater variety, so hopefully I will continue to discover different ways of photographing it. Writing adds further depth and grows my connection, and I feel very fortunate to have stumbled into its riches.

Consider me happy! Thanks so much Martin. I’m very much interested in how things feel, and trying to evoke a memory of the moment. I’ve been through all the literal interpretation, full depth of field landscape photography, and enjoyed it at the time, but this is closer to my natural vision and feels right. I never thought I’d appreciate myopia!

I just love this Michela, I’m so with you in the joy of the little jewels, miniature birds of paradise, unnoticed by the majority, yet glimmering like stars when you stop and notice them. Perfection.

Thanks so much Sarah. I think there’s a degree of comfort too in the small things, when big seems beyond comprehension.
